Discovering Scottish Food, And Why It’s So Much Better Than You Think
When my wife and I first started planning a trip to Scotland, our friends would laughingly say, “Well, that will make you lose weight!” Their point was that Scotland was not known as a foodies haven.
One friend said he had heard the best way to describe Scottish food was “Imagine English food without an Indian component.” Hmm… We had been to England before and, admittedly, the best food we had there was Indian.
Further, like many people, I had become obsessed with learning about Haggis. Surely it couldn’t be as bad as most people say. Not being ones to really listen to people without first-hand experience, we continued to plan our trip. I even made sure we would have a chance to try Haggis!
Months later, when we arrived in Edinburgh, we found a very different Scottish culinary landscape. To cut a long story short, by far the worst meal we had during our two-week stay was at an American fast-food chain restaurant in Edinburgh! I won’t say the name of the chain, but it appears to be owned by some clown named Ronald.
In reality, we found Scottish cuisine to be fantastic. And while some people may prefer to “ignore the ingredients,” I choose to highlight them. Yes, Haggis…
